Biarritz is THE centre of European surfing. Its a combination of the picture perfect seaside village, the amazing atmosphere, and of course the almost continuous 50 km (30 miles) of the best breaks in Europe that make Biarritz the place to surf.

Surfing came to Biarritz, in 1957, almost by chance. Today it forms a huge part of the local culture. More than 40 years on, the king of sport in this part of France. In fact some of the best surfers in the world have made Biarritz their home and the Biarritz Surf Festival  (held every year in July) attracts more than 150,000 spectators and surfers from all over the world

The name of Grande Plage, Cote des Basques, Hossegor and Seignosse Le Penon means quality and perfection to a surfer. The surf in the region provides barrel rides that unload on the beach through the day and night all year long.   With such a huge variety of quality -it offers great places to learn as well as a great places for professionals to truly enjoy!

The questions is often asked - What makes the surf around Biarritz SO good? A finger of deep water points directly at the majority of Basque (Biarritz is the centre) coastline from the Atlantic ridge. This is a deep scar on the ocean floor, formed millions of years ago, and  helps direct the Atlantic swells containing quality surf directly to the surf beaches of South West France and leaves them relatively is untouched by any disturbance until it hits that sand bar where you ride it in! This is a great place for every standard of surfer from Learner to Advanced to experience quality surf. Biarritz is located at the end of a zone going from the coast of Gironde to the south of Les Landes completely covered with long sand beaches as far as the eye can see, or perfectly formed bays ripe for surfing. Therefore Biarritz offers a variety of waves for almost all the conditions. Its surfer paradise!
